Here is an updated list of Rey's potential relatives....incl. a rathar loving royal who seems quite popular Razz
Please also mention why you think the person(s) could be related to Rey. (multiple choices are allowed).

Rey's Lineage Discussion II - 1 Empty Re: Rey's Lineage Discussion II - 1

Post by vaderito on Sun 17 Apr 2016, 8:11 am

@FrolickingFizzgig

Indeed. The problem is banking on visual parallels as proof of relation when they make a lot more sense as protagonist/protagonist callbacks. There is absolutely nothing in the movie that should genuinely make anybody who understands storytelling believe that Rey is Luke's in my opinion. But not everybody understands storytelling, and many are just surface-viewers who don't think about the implications of every potential plot-twist (and have no reason to think about the implications). There's nothing wrong with surface-viewing, but narrative analysis proves that Reywalker never made sense. It would take its own movie to explain, and it would still cause numerous character assassinations, make the timeline unbearably convoluted and rely on unreliable deus-ex-machinas like selective mind-wiping. It's just bad storytelling all around.

From that surface-perspective I can see why someone would see Maz's line about the lightsaber as a hint that Rey might be related to Luke. But when you actually think about it... isn't she just stating the facts?

> That lightsaber was Luke's
> And his father's before him
> And now it calls to you

Those really are just the obvious facts. They don't say anything about Rey's relation to Luke. We know she didn't know who Rey was, so why would she be randomly saying that Luke was her father then? People jumped to conclusions and decided to read into a somewhat poorly worded line for the only time in the entire movie, ignoring the fact that Maz's subsequent speech really makes Reywalker unlikely. If belonging is ahead, how can Luke be behind? And anyway, the whole thing really can be explained by the fact that Rey seems to have some weird connection to Ben. It was his lightsaber once too.

IMO, problem with Reywalker theorizing is that conclusions from surface-viewing are taken as canon. So instead of "maz says that LS belonged to Anakin and Luke and is now calling to Rey" we get "Maz says that Rey is Luke's daughter cause Luke and Anakin saber called to her".

Worse is Forceback vision, where editing between Kylo "saving" present day Rey and Rey witnessing her young self's abandonment, created conclusion that "Kylo couldn't bring himself to kill his little cousin so he saved her from the massacre and dropped her on jakku". That never happened in the Forceback which is really the following:

Someone tries to attack someone whom we don't see because Rey takes attacked person's POV.

Kylo's saber kills the attacker from behind.

Rey who was on the ground gets up. Sees masked Kylo surrounded by KoR

Kylo sees her and walks towards her. She walks backwards.

Sees her young self looking up at the leaving ship, yelling "Come back!" while Unkar Plutt's holds her arm saying "be quiet girl"

That's what's in the movie. But what serves as alpha and omega of Reywalker theory is pure embellishment and conclusion that are not in the movie. Such as:

Kylo and KoR Forceback is from Jedi school massacre (debunked)

Kylo dropped Rey after the massacre (debunked that dropping and massacre are connected since dropping happened years earlier)

So out of sequence editing in the movie, became in sequence conclusion that is now considered canon in circles where such canon supports a shaky theory.

Surface viewing is a pest.

Voted for Sheev this time around. Likelihood would be Kenobi, but I think Palpatine would make for a more compelling story. And don't Kenobi and Palpatine have the same Corasanti accent? Just like Rey?

Kenobi and Palp have Coruscanti accent with detectable Scottish lilt. Rey doesn't have Scottish lilt. But than, most viewers wouldn't know the difference. They all say "monstah" "brothah" "traitah" "Fohce" "Dahk" "Daht/Lohd Vaydah", etc. Laughing

I'd say Kenobi for poetry, but I'm open to other ideas.
The problem with Skywalkers theorists is that they have Luke 2.0. It's there, in the movie. But like we discussed, they will cry rivers of tears

Rey's Lineage Discussion II - 1 Empty Re: Rey's Lineage Discussion II - 1

Post by panki on Sun 17 Apr 2016, 8:51 am

I've voted for three characters who have walked on the dark side since it might make the story more interesting and the story of Rey's fight to stay in the light more compelling.

Rey's Lineage Discussion II - 1 Senator_palpatine
1. Sheev Palpatine:
- Rey has a core planet accent like Palpatine.
- Palpatine's voice is heard twice in Rey's vision.
- She shows darkside potential.
- Palpatine could read thoughts and control people.
- In the EU, Palpatine has had a son (who is very similar to Rey) and a niece whose story could be brought into canon as Rey's backstory.
- If Rey is Palpatine's heir, she would be a royal since the Palpatine family was one of the noble families of Naboo....and she could potentially be an empress of the galaxy....thus having an impact on the galaxy and it's future.

Rey's Lineage Discussion II - 1 Ezra-Rebels-short_featured-322x268
2. Ezra Bridger:
- Like Rey, Ezra was separated from his parents and was searching for them.
- He spent many years alone and survived through salvaging and selling mechanical parts.
- The mind trick came naturally to him even before training as a jedi.
- Kanan's lighsaber called to him in a scene very similar to Rey finding Luke's lightsaber.
- He is good with mechanical stuff.
- He wore an stolen imperial pilot's helmet in a scene very similar to Rey's helmet scene in TFA.
- He is naturally drawn to the dark side.
- He can control creatures by getting into their minds.
- He is Luke and Leia's age so is the right age to be Rey's parent.

Rey's Lineage Discussion II - 1 250px-QuinlanHS
3. Quinlan Vos:
- He is a true grey jedi, not caring at all for the rules of the jedi council.
- He was famous for psychometry i.e. touching objects and getting force visions of people associated with that object.
- He was good at the jedi mind trick, telekinesis and controlling the minds of creatures.
- His style of fighting is a mix of dark and light forms.
- He was a close friend of Obi-wan from the time they were young padawans. Obi-wan saved his life when they were young. So it makes sense for Rey to hear Obi-wan's voice in her force vision.
- He is supposed to have survived order 66 so could have had children. In canon, he wanted to formalize his romantic relationship with Ventress but she was killed saving his life. In the EU, he marries one of Count Dooku's spies and they have a FS son (Rey's father?).
- He goes to the dark side because it is required so that he can kill Count Dooku...but he returns to the light side because of his love for Asajj Ventress (who rides a rathar in one story Razz).
- He finally doesn't kill Count Dooku despite having the chance because it would have immersed him into the dark side (despite Dooku killing Ventress)....an act which Anakin finally does later....so if he is Rey's grandfather, there would be a nice contrast between the decision he took and the decision Anakin took.
- His family were the rulers of two planets so again Rey would be a royal....in contrast to thinking of herself as a scavenger.

I voted for the rathtar-loving royal, for reasons which can be found in the previous thread Wink

Also Sheev, because Rey Palpatine was my first pet theory and I still like it.

What suddenly made Prana more likely in my eyes - even as Rey's father - was JJ's clarification. Through being mentioned and through his damned rathtars, Prana is already "in her world" without actually being in the film in person.

I've also got this silly theory how Princess Rey would be a figure of major significance to the entire galaxy. But is this the right thread for silly theories?

I've switched to the Rey Random ("none of the above") camp.  This is based on the recent statements from Daisy, et al, about her parentage not being important, not being in VII, etc. So, I feel like it's someone we haven't met yet. Given that I've left the Rey Kenobi camp, I am now thinking that it's very likely she's got dark origins of some kind--I'm just not sure that it's Palpatine at this point.

Kylo's a lost cause even though there are two movies left. It's like they think the writers just created these characters with no ideas about where they were going to take them.

OK, Right I understand Rey Random but

if Rey is truly the opposite of Ren, her lineage would have to flow like this

Grandfather GOOD..

Parent= descendent of the GOOD grandfather turned bad and married a darksider.

Because Ren is the result of:

Grandparent BAD

Parent = Descendent of the BAD grandfather who is good married to a good man

Also Rey's parent does not know who his/her father was because her father did not know she/he existed.

Very good point - for me this still points back to Obi Wan. So far this series is sorely missing that presence and that would tie in nicely.

I would be happy with any parentage theory except for Rey being a Skywalker or Solo, which now seems to be debunked.
I was lurking on other fan forums and tumblers. I haven't spent much time reading Skywalker or bust fan's thoughts but am shocked by some of their comments.
