TFA and The Dark Crystal

Post by Slade on Sun 17 Jul 2016, 3:49 am

TFA reminds me of the movie The Dark Crystal, which I have not seen since 1982.  Take a look.  What do you think?  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Crystal

OMG.  I just realized one of the protagonists of The Dark Crystal is named Kira.

And here's the "Prophecy":

When single shines the triple sun,

What was sundered and undone

Shall be whole, the two made one,

By Gelfling hand, or else by none.

Sound familiar??

Even the two different tribes look ...erm...familiar.

These are the Good Guys:

And these are the Bad Guys (snafu loading--scroll down past the two repeating pics of good guys)

There's also a tribal looking prophetess helper character who gives Jen (the protagonist) an item that will help him on his quest.

And the UrRu (Mystics) village:

And the Skeksis palace, which reminds me of that weird tree on Ach-to.

As I faintly recall, both the UrRu (Mystics) and the Skeksis use something akin to the Force, especially the UrRu.  I dunno.  I think it's an interesting comparison.  Myth and universal themes and all that.

Did you make time to watch the movie again? I would also highly recommend the novelization. Jung, Jung, Jung. All about integrating the dark and light.

"What was sundered and undone shall be whole, the two made one."
"Now the prophecy is fulfilled. We are again one. Many ages ago, in our arrogance and delusion, we shattered the pure Crystal and our world split apart. Your courage and sacrifice have made us whole, and restored the true power of the Crystal."

Spoiler:
The Skeksis and Mystics are two sides of the same coin. Literally. They were whole creatures who split into pairs when they cracked the Crystal. The two gelflings, Jen and Kira, are also Adam and Eve figures, the last of their kind who restore balance to their world and begin it anew. So you have the Skeksis/Mystics as Sith and Jedi and Jen/Kira as Ben/Rey. Kira also dies and is reborn through Jen's love.

@Mana Holy Sith, yes they do!

I think we need to set up a Dark Crystal viewing party at some point...

I remember when that movie came out. I was little and it looked too scary to watch. Maybe after 34 years I can handle it ... we'll see. Laughing

Yes, hence my thinking of it in relation to TFA.

@Slade Oh okay - think I misread. It sounded like you hadn't seen it since you were a kid.

@FrolickingFizzgig Why is the only person on this forum with a Dark Crystal inspired name not participating in this thread already?  Wink

LOL sorry. xD I've already written a few posts comparing them (back in the day). It's a great film though, and I can definitely see why it's so easy to find similarities because both follow the idea that light and dark can only exist in harmony.

***couch ahem...cough*** I *may or may not* have written an exquisite piece of fan fiction about 10 years ago that has Kira and SkekNa (the slave master) falling in love with each other. ***couch ahem...cough***

I can't believe I'm admitting this here. Please don't judge me!!! Laughing

But yes, to answer your question, Kira and Jen absolutely do share each other's memories, and can hear each other's thoughts through a technique called DreamFasting. Very, very similar to the Force bond.

@IoJovi The only way I'd pass judgment is if it had been with the Chamberlain.  Laughing Every time that one made that obnoxious "hhhhmmmmm" noise I wanted to strangle it!

lol! Laughing

Yeah....no. I'm sitting here in my cubicle at work trying to silence my laughter and failing. I don't remember what made me choose SkekNa as the one she fell for (I actually came up with the idea in the early '90s, but didn't write it til around 2005), but I remember I wanted it to be a Skeksis that didn't have such a prominent role in the movie. It's also total AU where they all look "human" (Skeksis and Gelflings alike). Other canon characters from other stories/books/film also make an appearance.

Post by rey09 on Sun 04 Feb 2018, 1:26 pm

So I watched the Dark Crystal as I know many on the forum were mentioning similarities in the past. Now that TLJ happened, the similarities between the two are mind boggling...You guys were talking about this before force bond even became canon lol. When they touch hands and the dreamfasting starts, their hands fade and you see fading in fire from a village attack. The imagery reminded me a lot of reylo fire hand scene. But yeah the dreamfasting is totally the force bond. And at the end very end when the two creatures become one, I mean that is just straight up prime jedi stuff. The wise beings are created from the evil and mystic halves, which is very cool. It shows how even those awful skeg things or whatever are also a half of the beautiful whole, no matter how abysmal they are. And I just love this quote: "Hold her to you, for she is part of you, as we all are part of each other." That scene was so touching...so reylo.... <3

@rey09 IMo, Reylo hand touch is like a mix of Dark Crystal and Ladyhawke:

Dark Crystal because Reylo touch makes them see each other's past and future (from 2:48 min, this isn't the best video I think that @frolickingfizzgig has a better one that shows their memories):

and Ladyhawke because of the aesthetic of the touch (from 2:06 min):
