Here cheers I loved the book - stayed up until early in the morning reading it. Although I do have a few complains about it... let me know when you finished it. I don't want to spoiler anything Wink

I am big fan of Lost Stars. In my opinion, best Star Wars canon novel so far (that I read of course). I haven't read everything that was released. Now I have to catch up on canon novels. As nice addition I will say that it was released as adult Star Wars novel in my country. Smile

I have heard that a number of times now, that it is the best canon novel. Why do you say that? (no spoilers, please Very Happy)

I haven't read that many canon novels. I've also heard that the RoTS novel is the best.

@adamdrivershair

hm, how to explain without spoilers?  Confus

It had all- adventure, romance, drama- and just the right narrating pace.
I felt for the protagonists -well, for Thane.. I just loved him!  H-beating

You kind off relive all the important events of the OT through the eyes of the characters.

OK, sometimes I had the feeling it was a bit too much coincidence in one or two cases- but that's just one small critic on my part and doesn't spoil the fun.

I certainly recommend it to everyone.

In my opinion it's not (just) a young adult book. It has some pretty heavy topics.

It's not really a spoiler but I hide it anyway to be save.
Spoiler:
It's the first Star Wars book I ever read (and I read a lot ) that actually spelled out sex - like S E X! Don't worry nothing explicit or graphic is mentioned but you know that it happened and they talk about it. I was like- WOW that I live to see THAT finally LOL

I loved the story and characters! I really cared for them. The book has some small problems like every one of them but they don't spoil the fun. I agree completely with what @Night Huntress wrote. Actually there isn't much to add to what she wrote without going into the spoilers territory. Smile

@nite0wl29

No- it hasn't really anything to do with TFA. I know the book title is misguiding (journey to Star Wars: The force awakens - Lost Stars?).
That's what many reviewers complained about and most of the one- star reviews came from. Some people bought Lost Stars with the wrong expectations - they thought to learn something new about the characters in TFA. This is not the case.

I recommend it anyway. You may not feel like investing into new characters when you want to finally learn something about the ones you care about in TFA, but it's a great story and makes you rethink some events from the OT. It kind of shows you a different view...

@Night Huntress @Geralt_Riv You guys weren't kidding. Started reading it last night and by this morning have made it halfway through!

I'm enjoying the characterization the most so far - you can tell she has put a lot of thought into the characters' motivations and it definitely works. I kind of miss the ambiguity of TFA, though, because in Lost Stars Gray usually spells out those motivations very clearly.

Spoiler:
I really, really need to go back and watch A New Hope again... It seemed like the destruction of the Death Star happened extremely quickly after Alderaan blowing up. Did anyone else think this? Now that I think about it I can't remember for the life of me how much time passed in between.

So I just got this book yesterday, and I couldn't put it down!! I'm up to the point where it's pretty much the beginning of A New Hope.

Re: Lost Stars by Claudia Gray Discussion

Ahh I finished the book!!! @Night Huntress

Spoiler:

*What a great climax! I was sure at various points that one or both of them was going to die; it was really heart-pumping. Also, I love how Gray brought back a scene from their training days where Ciena described what she would do if her ship was infiltrated. That passage always seemed particularly detailed and interesting to me, so it gave me chills to see it fleshed out like that in the most dramatic possible way.

*God, Ciena, do you ever give up? She just kept persisting in the Empire almost beyond the limit of believability. You'd better believe that after I'd seen the Death Star resurrected, my mother enslaved and feeling trapped and ready to die, that if my lover showed up ready to take me away from it all that I would fall in his arms. I might re-read this just to understand her character better.

*Nash was the most surprising character for me. He was eyeroll-worthy to me at the start - I felt it was obviously telegraphed that he was going to be one of the first to die in a tragic act of defection. I also felt certain that at the end of the book, Gray would switch to a different perspective than Ciena or Thane's. How shocking, then, to have it be HIM, ready to carry on the legacy to the end. Damn.

*Again with everyone referring to and coming back to Jakku. Something is going on with this planet. All these new canon books keep referring to it.

*I loved that we got an intimate scene in the Fortress. I really liked the early passages where they played there, and was hoping we'd see the cave again before the end of the book. It had felt a bit sad to me that they first made love in a cantina, but then again that was the bitter nature of their lives.

*LOL at this line: "[Darth Vader's] rages when he was displeased were legendary." Kylo is actually carrying on the legacy wonderfully and probably has no idea.

*Also loved this Reylo-ish line about Thane and Ciena: "They mirrored each other." Let's hope the next phrase does not apply to our favorite couple: "...almost touching but forever apart." (It can't possibly go that way - you've got a literal gulf and Kylo very pointedly not touching Rey in the interrogation - we're not going to spend the next two movies with that same distance remaining.)

*I appreciated that Thane realized he actually could move on and heal despite losing Ciena. For some reason I imagined he would be suicidal to believe he had lost her forever. A note of hope that I appreciated.

*People complain about the 'fan service'y moments in Rogue One with Darth Vader, how the film's best elements were borrowed from other canon. I felt like Lost Stars indulged in this a bit. A lot of what I found fascinating in the book simply came from the fact that it was a "behind the scenes" of some of Star Wars' biggest moments. At a certain point it was frustrating to know that much more dramatic things - Luke and the Emperor's showdown, for example - were happening just off-screen. It added so much to the book, though, that I don't mind. I'm just really interested to see a new canon book as satisfying as this one that has NO connection to any previously known characters, events or worlds. That would be quite an accomplishment to me.

Overall, great read.
