@Darth Dingbat

Maybe it's not only his idea of centrepiece, but his idea of romance.

Maybe he thinks Rey and Kylo are central, but doesn't want to describe it as romance.

For me, romance, even if not fully realized, if not fully reciprocated, is romance. (But then Rian said there won't be unrequited love).

When I see trembling Kylo, with a deep breath, googly eyes, extending his hand, I see romance.

If Rey takes her lightsaber and cuts off his hand (like some fans have suggested), it doesn't erase his gesture. It would be unrequited romance, but it would still be romance. If Rey still hates Kylo in TLJ, but if he's willing to open himself up and show vulnerability, for me that's romance, or a romantic arc. That said, I do think these two will come to some sort of understanding in the movie, and I can see clearly that Kylo doesn't see her just as a potential buddy. So it's there! Anyways, maybe it's just a matter of definition.

And yeah, just to clarify, I'm the coolest person expecting TLJ, and I don't have any anxiety. Reylo doesn't cause me the least anxiety cause I'm pretty sure it's going to be developed. I don't have any problem with tragic Reylo or even unfulfilled Reylo if it's a good story. The romantic arc is already started in TFA, so it's there and I'm looking forward to see it developed.

I wrote this thread because I just thought that everything we saw from TLJ contradicted Rian's statement, and it baffled me, because he's always been so earnest and open about the movie. My understanding is that Rey and Kylo's relationship will be central to TLJ, even if they don't spend a lot of time together, and that Rey and Kylo will advance their romantic arc in TLJ. I don't think they'll really get together and "become a couple"in this movie. They will have more open romantic gestures, and Rey will reciprocate to some extent, but they have to be separated at the end of the movie, for plot reasons. For me it's a central romance. Maybe for Rian it's not central cause they won't "become a couple" yet?

But hey, whatever. If Rian considers the central focus of plot B (Han and Leia) as central, we have very different opinions. My theory is that RJ must have slept in the Luke and Yoda scenes, and has a headcanon that ESB is all about Han, like many people do. If the movie is about Han Solo, and all Han Solo wants is Leia, suddenly their romance becomes central.

And maybe it all comes down to semantics.

Edit: @Darth Dingbat I love "spiritual" connection as well, and I love the Luke and Leia bond, for example. But I really think it would have been super weird if they had not been revealed as siblings. They obviously loved each other and had a deep connection (as per ESB's ending). If they hadn't been revealed to be siblings, I think their arc would have been disappointing. That's what I think is the case with Kylo and Rey.
@AceofWands

We know that Rian said that romance is not central to their story but he is a kind of director and writer who is very character driven. He even relates to his characters and wants us to. His comment on twitter about how we can all relate to Kylo. What if he meant not a central romance from characters perspective and he looks at it like this? Because then romance between Han and Leia in ESB was pretty central to their stories. Much of it evolved around them and their feelings for each other, especially Han. With Kylo and Rey it could be only part of it, because we have Luke, Leia, Snoke and their struggles with understanding and finding their place.

Just an idea.

It's basically a game with words because he never denied a romance, his style of directing and writing and definitely it's not unrequited. Both of characters will be on the same page.

@Kylo Men
While I don't agree that it would necessarily be silly to remain in the realm of strong subtext, I do think we have to remember that the article writer went out of his way to "debunk" Reylo and other SW ships. When Rian didn't give him enough he decided to read into his words and publish a warped interpretation, when in reality Rian's quote is quite different.

As much as I like Finn and Rose, they are a bit too close to Han and Leia dynamic of a bickering couple. Especially, if you look at Rose and Finn at the casino pictures. What we know from a relatively solid source that Finn wins big at the casino and Rose is angry, Finn protests. It's like Han and Leia.

I think you're spot on.

Rey and Kylo have so much more to worry about, and so many more struggles.

Maybe even though the romance (or at least romantic arc) is intertwined with their arcs, Rian Johnson can't consider it "central". Fair enough. That makes sense.

Edit:

@DarthRen I agree Finn and Rose have some of the sass of Han and Leia, and KMT even seems to have a bit of the great sense of humour of Carrie Fisher. But maybe their romance is not central to their arcs? It's certainly not central to the story. Maybe RJ meant "no central Han and Leia romance style", not meaning that there's no Han and Leia style romance, but that the Han/Leia style romance is not central. Maybe he was even referring to that romance (finn/Rose, Han/Leia style) as not being a centrepiece.

Rian worded it in a pretty fascinating way that even few months after this we still don't know what it means.  Laughing If this is by any means a signal for the movie, we're in for a good stuff. At this rate he might sneak there some accidental kiss.

It's an impossible question to answer, if you think about it. The moment you imply there is a big romantic component, the question becomes "so who's going to hook up with whom??" instead of being wide open to anything happening - or not happening.

I've been watching a lot of TLJ trailer reactions as well as first-time reactions to the Vader-is-Luke's-father reveal.

The reaction to Vader revealing he is Luke's father, and the reaction to Kylo reaching out to Rey, have been strikingly similar in most cases. People's mouths literally drop open, usually followed by a shocked, "WHAT?!"

Matt Martin once compared Reylo to "I am your father" and it is indeed getting a very similar response, even just from a trailer.

That's awesome! I have long since thought the reveal of Reylo would be the "I am your father moment of the trilogy, especially to those who either didn't catch it in TFA, or were fervent Reywalkers. Heck, I'm chest deep in the Reylo fandom and even I screamed out loud!!!!

Hahaha, that’s where I recognized him from too. His Mr Collins is actually kind of endearing, just enthusiastically clueless about the people he’s interacting with. He’s the first time I realized that there are people fanatical enough about Disneyland to move here from out of state to be close to it (moving here because of climbing or skiing in the Sierras I get, Disneyland I don’t).

By the way, this is where I’m curious about KMT being a YouTuber helped get her foot in the door. Because John Dardanelle is also friends/collaborators with the Vlog Brothers (the friend who worked in YA got to be part of their Carnegie Hall event)

I don't think people are surprised with Reylo, at this point I don't think they think of them as being romantically connected. It's more about the heroin going to the dark side.

Well, in his clarification of VF's misrepresentation of his original quote, Rian did explicitly say that there was no "one to one" equivalent to Han and Leia. I've always found that to be an interesting word choice that feels like it could very well be pointing at two romances.
